Cusco - Aguas Calientes
The first day begins when we pick you up at your hotel in Cusco (3,399 m) and drive through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo station. There you board the Vistadome Observatory, a panoramic train with wide side windows, a glass ceiling and an observatory car designed so you don't miss a single detail of the landscape unfolding along the way. It is, without a doubt, a privileged way to approach Machu Picchu.
During the journey the train descends through the Urubamba valley following the river, between green mountains, Inca terraces and vegetation that gradually changes from the highlands to the cloud forest. You arrive in Aguas Calientes, the town at the foot of the citadel and the starting point for the next day's visit. Because this is the two-day version, you have the whole afternoon free to settle in and acclimatize without hurry, something the full-day tour doesn't allow.
You can use those hours to stroll the town's streets, try the local food or take some early photos of the surroundings. And if you want to relax after the trip, the hot springs that give the town its name are a few minutes from the center. You spend the night in Aguas Calientes (lodging is quoted separately), a key advantage of this option: sleeping so close to the entrance means you can go up very early the next day and enjoy Machu Picchu with fewer visitors and the best light for your photos.
