Cusco - Aguas Calientes
The first day starts when we pick you up at your hotel in Cusco (3,399 m) and drive through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo station. From there you ride the Expedition train, tourist class, comfortable and with good windows, the best-value way to reach Machu Picchu by train.
The route follows the Urubamba River and gradually descends through the valley, between mountains, terraced fields and vegetation that announces the nearby cloud forest. Your destination is Aguas Calientes, the town tucked at the foot of the citadel, from where you'll set off the next day. Since this is the two-day version, you arrive with the whole afternoon free and without the tight schedule of a full-day tour, ideal for settling into a calm pace and acclimatizing.
Spend those hours your own way: walk the town's streets, try the local food or rest for the big day ahead. And if you feel like relaxing, the hot springs that gave the town its name are a few minutes' walk away. You spend the night in Aguas Calientes (lodging is quoted separately), and that is exactly the advantage of this option: sleeping a few minutes from the entrance, you can go up very early and enjoy the citadel with fewer visitors, in a quieter atmosphere and with better light for your photos.
