What to do in Lima in one or two days: neighborhoods, food and safe plans

Lima can be amazing… or chaos if you arrive without a plan. And when you only have 1 or 2 days, there is no room for improvisation: traffic, distances and the number of options can cause you to end up wasting time or choosing areas that do not suit you. So, if you want to really enjoy this city (without stress and with good decisions), this guide leaves you all figured out.

Here you will find which neighborhoods should be visited according to your travel style, what to eat to try the best of Lima’s gastronomy without falling into traps, what plans are really worth it when time is short and, above all, how to move around safely and practically. In addition, I leave you itineraries ready to copy, with clear routes for 1 day or 2 days, so that you only have to worry about enjoying.

What we recommend you do in Lima in one or two days

If you only have 1 or 2 days in Lima, the smartest thing to do is not to try to “see it all”. Lima is huge, traffic can waste hours, and the experience changes a lot depending on the district. For a short trip, it is advisable to move mainly through Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro (comfortable areas for tourism) and leave the Historic Center for a well-planned visit: during the day, with clear points and defined transfers. With this approach you take away a complete Lima: coast, gastronomy, history and a cultural touch, without ending up exhausted or with the feeling of having wasted time.

Lima is enjoyed when you sort the day by zones and choose 2 or 3 strong experiences. In a short itinerary, the essential thing is: walk the coast, try Peruvian cuisine, and see the colonial heart (without improvising). If you want to minimize logistics, a half-day city tour also works very well because it combines the main points of the city in a single departure and saves you transfers.

Before entering the plan, a realistic piece of advice: Lima is a great city and it is traveled with common sense. Keep your cell phone stored when you are not using it, avoid empty streets at night, use app transportation or tourist mobility, and do not “explore blindly” outside the tourist areas if you do not know the city.

Practical itinerary for 1 day in Lima (stress-free and with safe approach)

Morning: Miraflores and the coast (modern Lima + Pacific view)
Start the day in Miraflores, ideal for walking and getting your bearings quickly. The simplest route is the Malecon, a strip of parks overlooking the ocean. Walk calmly, enjoy the sea air and make a stop at a viewpoint. A classic photo spot is the Parque del Amor, perfect to open the day with the hassle-free “coastal Lima.”

If you are interested in adding history without leaving a safe district, the Huaca Pucllana is a success. It is a pre-Inca archaeological complex in the heart of the city, and it gives you a context of Lima beyond the colonial. In a short day, this type of visit works because it doesn’t force you to cross half the city or rearrange the entire itinerary.

Lunch: Peruvian cuisine without wasting time
For a good meal without complication, stay in Miraflores or move to San Isidro if you want a quieter atmosphere. Lima is a gastronomic capital, but with just one day you don’t need to chase “the trendy place”: the important thing is to try representative dishes and choose a place with a good reputation.

What do we recommend you order? Here is a list of delicious dishes:

  • Ceviche (ideal at noon)
  • Lima cause
  • Lomo saltado
  • Ají de gallina
  • Seafood rice if you want something more coastal

A practical tip: if you are going to eat ceviche, do it at lunch; At night it is usually heavier and does not always fall the same.

Afternoon: Historic Center (with plan and day)
The Historic Center is worth it, but it is not the place to improvise random routes. The most effective way is to go with two or three specific points and move between them with defined transport. The classic tour includes the Plaza Mayor and the emblematic buildings around it. For a different visit, add a convent with catacombs (it is one of those experiences that are really remembered).

If you like the idea of “seeing the main things” without thinking too much about logistics, a half-day city tour usually includes just these points: coast in Miraflores, pre-Inca huaca, Plaza Mayor and a convent. It is an efficient option if you are in short time or if you prefer to reduce the risk of getting lost or moving through areas that do not suit you.

Night: Canyon to close the day (atmosphere, dinner and short walk)
If you have energy left, finish in Barranco. It is the bohemian and photogenic district, ideal for walking for a while, having a drink and dining with atmosphere. At night, the rule is simple: move around in the app, avoid lonely streets and stay in areas with movement.

Quick checklist for a comfortable day

  • Sunscreen (even if the sky is cloudy)
  • Sunglasses
  • Battery/power bank
  • A light coat (the coastal breeze is deceiving)
  • Comfortable shoes (you’ll walk more than you think)

Ideal itinerary for 2 days in Lima (more complete)

With 48 hours you can put together a much more rounded Lima: one day for the essentials and another day to enjoy without haste, with culture and neighborhoods with identity. The key remains the same: group by zones so that traffic does not destroy your plan.

Day 1: Essential Lima (coast + huaca + Historic Center)
Make the 1-day plan as is. If you do it with a city tour in the morning or afternoon, you have half a day free to eat calmly and walk around Miraflores or Barranco. If you do it on your own, reserve the Center for the late afternoon, but always in daylight.

Day 2: Barranco by day + San Isidro + museum or cultural experience
Barranco changes a lot in daylight: it is more walkable, quieter and perfect for photos, cafes and galleries. Dedicate 1 or 2 hours to it and then move to San Isidro for lunch without rushing.

In the afternoon, you can choose a cultural option:

  • An important museum if you are interested in history, art or archaeology.
  • An additional urban walk through Miraflores if you prefer the coast and parks.
  • A more “experience” gastronomic plan if your priority is to eat well.

Dinner on the second day: make it special (if you want Lima to be engraved in your mind)
If your budget allows, the second day is the perfect time for a more careful dinner. If not, put together a “smart route” of dishes: a light starter (causa or tiradito), a main course (lomo saltado or ají de gallina) and a typical dessert (such as suspiro). The important thing is not to waste the night on transfers.

Safety without turns (for 1 or 2 days)

  • It prioritizes Miraflores, Barranco and San Isidro.
  • Historic Centre: day visit, with clear points and defined mobility.
  • Use app-based transportation or tourist mobility.
  • Avoid walking through empty streets at night, even if it “seems close”.
  • Do not display valuables; Put your phone away when you’re not using it.
  • Please carry basic identification and leave your passport at the accommodation when possible.

If you want to close Lima with the feeling of “ready, I saw the essentials and I didn’t waste time”, this type of city tour is the perfect finale. In a few hours it brings together the most representative of the city: modern Lima in front of the sea (Miraflores and its viewpoints), the pre-Inca past with a visit to a huaca in the heart of the urban area, and the colonial heart of the Historic Center with its most iconic points. It’s a convenient way to get to know Lima without getting bogged down with transfers, routes, or last-minute decisions, especially if you’re just passing through or have a tight schedule.
