Ultimate Guide: What to Pack for Your Trip to Cusco and Machu Picchu (and Don’t Suffer with the Weather!)

Packing for a trip to Cusco and Machu Picchu can be challenging. The weather in Cusco and the Peruvian Andes is notoriously variable, even on the same day! You may experience radiant sunshine, sudden rain, and intense cold. Therefore, if you would like to make your vacation in Machu Picchu or take a complete tour in Peru, it is important to take into account what to bring in your suitcase. To help you put together the perfect packing list for Peru, we at Inka Planet Adventure have created this detailed guide on what to wear to Cusco and what is essential for your visit to the Inca citadel.

What to Bring on Your Vacation to Peru: Understanding the Weather in Cusco and the Andes

To understand what the climate is like in Cusco and the Andes, we must understand that there are two main seasons in the region:

  • Dry Season (April to October): Sunny days and clear skies, but very cold nights (they can drop below 0°C). It is the most popular time to visit.
  • Rainy Season (November to March): More frequent rainfall, especially in the afternoons, but milder day and night temperatures. Greener landscapes.

The key is layered clothing. This will allow you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. There is no better time of year than another. The ideal time to travel to Peru varies depending on the type of experience you are looking for and the area you decide to visit. This destination has unique attractions to offer at any time of the year, whether during the rainy season or in the dry season.

If your trip coincides with the rainiest months, don’t worry: we prepared a selection of must-see places that are worth visiting. Discover them!

Essential List of Clothing for Cusco and Machu Picchu

As we had mentioned before, it is important to have several changes of clothes so that the weather does not surprise you unexpectedly. Below, we will see some ideas of what you should keep in your suitcase, emphasizing some tours that we also recommend you know:

Top Layers

  • Breathable T-Shirts (Short and Long Sleeve): About 3-5. Synthetic materials or merino wool are ideal because they dry quickly.
  • Fleece or Light Sweatshirt: One or two for a warm mid-layer.
  • Waterproof and Windproof Jacket: Absolutely essential! It will protect you from rain and wind, especially if you visit during the rainy season or hike like the one in the Humantay Lagoon.
  • Warm Jacket (Down or Synthetic): For cold nights in Cusco and if you plan early morning tours such as the Rainbow Mountain.

Lower Layers

  • Trekking or Convertible Pants: 2-3 pairs. They are comfortable, lightweight and quick-drying. Convertibles (which are made into shorts) are very versatile.
  • Leggings or Thermal Leggings (Optional): To wear under pants on very cold days or to sleep.
  • Comfortable Pants (Jeans/Other): A pair for the city or for traveling. (Consider that jeans take time to dry if they get wet.)

Footwear

  • Waterproof Trekking Boots or Hiking Shoes: Your best investment! They must be comfortable and already “tamed” (do not wear them for the first time on the trip). Indispensable for Machu Picchu and any hike.
  • Comfortable Sneakers for the City: To walk around Cusco or rest your feet.

Essential Accessories

  • Wool or Fleece hat: For the cold, especially in the mornings and evenings.
  • Gloves: Very useful on altitude treks or cold nights.
  • Scarf or Neck Gaiter: Versatile to protect from the cold and sun.
  • Hat or Cap for the Sun: The sun at altitude is very strong.
  • Sunglasses with UV Protection.
  • Hiking Socks (Various Pairs): Made of wool or synthetic, which prevent blisters.

What specific clothing for the Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lagoon?

For these high-altitude treks, clothing for the Rainbow Mountain or clothing for the Humantay Lagoon should prioritize warmth and protection against unpredictable weather:

  • All the layers mentioned above (especially thermal, fleece, warm jacket and waterproof).
  • Good hat and gloves.
  • Robust trekking boots.
  • Consider trekking poles (many agencies rent them).

What to pack for Machu Picchu specifically?

When packing for Machu Picchu, you should be prepared for sudden changes in weather and physical demands: the hikes can be long and steep, so endurance and comfort are key. Also consider how you’ll protect your devices and documents from the sun, rain, and dust, and how to stay hydrated and energized during excursions. Also, plan your daily logistics to make the most of every moment without overloading your backpack.

We share a list so you can be prepared:

  • Wear light layers, as the weather in the citadel can be warmer and more humid than in Cusco.
  • Waterproof jacket (weather can change quickly).
  • Insect repellent.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Hat.
  • Comfortable hiking shoes.
  • Remember that large tripods, drones, or food in large quantities are not allowed in the sanctuary. Check the regulations of your Machu Picchu Tour.

Other important items on your packing list for Peru

  • Small day backpack (to carry water, snacks, camera, extra jacket).
  • High SPF sunscreen.
  • Lip balm with SPF.
  • Reusable water bottle (to reduce plastic).
  • Universal power adapter (Peru uses type A and C).
  • Extra camera and batteries.
  • Personal medications and a small first aid kit (painkillers, band-aids, antiseptic).
  • Copies of your important documents (passport, travel insurance).

Pack smart, travel comfortably

In conclusion, we can say that determining what clothes to wear to Cusco and your different tours is key to enjoying yourself to the fullest. Dress in the Andes is based on layering and preparation for all types of weather. Check out this packing list for Peru before you close your bags and get ready for an amazing adventure!
